Title: “Strengthening of RC columns with FRP-based systems for attending the occurrence of extreme events: experimental assessment and design-oriented approaches”
Joaquim A. O. Barros is Full Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering of Minho
University, Director of the PhD in Civil Engineering and coordinator of the Structural
Composites Group. He is a Fellow American Concrete Institute (ACI), and voting member of
ACI Technical Committees: 440-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement and 544-FiberReinforced Concrete. He is a member of the Technical Committees of the International
Federation for Structural Concrete (fib): TG 4.1-Fibre Reinforced Concrete, TG 5.1-FRP
Reinforcement for Concrete Structures, TG 4.3-Structural design with flowable concrete,
and Convener of the fib TG 2.4.1-Modelling of Fibre Reinforced Concrete Structures. He is a
member of the International union of laboratories and experts in Construction materials,
systems and Structures – RILEM: TC-234-DUC – Design procedures for the use of composites
in strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. He was a member of the RILEM TC 162-
TDF and ACI 506 – Shotcreting. He was a council member of the International Institute for
FRP in Construction (IIFC). He was member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the
Australian “Design Guideline for RC structures retrofitted with FRP and metal plates: beams
and slabs“. His research interests include structural strengthening, composite materials,
fiber reinforced concrete and the development of constitutive models for the simulation of
the behavior of cement based and polymer based materials, and their implementation in
software based on the finite element method (FEM). He his author of more than 800 papers
